OUR LEGACY

There are eight families whose direct descendants remain to tell the stories of resilience and fortitude that defined the town of Rosewood: the Bradleys, the Carriers, the Colemans, the Edwards, the Evans, the Goins, the Halls and the Robinsons families. But a simple request two years ago sparked this centennial movement.

Before she passed away, former The Rosewood Family, Inc. historian Barbara Scantling Moore asked her brother Gregory Doctor and her daughters, Wendy and Wanda, to take on the responsibility to make sure that the centennial was a big event. Gregory is the cousin of Arnett Doctor, the descendant who led the fight for the families’ historic reparations settlement. With his own concerns about elder gatekeepers passing on and the waning knowledge of the Rosewood legacy in the public, Gregory was inspired by Barabra’s request. So he and his wife, Paris Murphy-Doctor, founded The Descendants of Rosewood, Inc. to host the centennial commemorative events to mark the 100th anniversary of Rosewood (#Rosewood100). In cooperation with the Rosewood Family Reunion, Inc., The Rosewood Foundation, The Real Rosewood Foundation, and the Rosewood Heritage Foundation, the mission of the centennial committee is to propel the Rosewood legacy into the future.

That future starts with honoring the lives that were taken, acknowledging the trauma that was left behind, sharing the stories of the past, commemorating the legacy of the survivors, and celebrating the promise of all that lies ahead. In an America that still struggles with the reverberating effects of its complicated history, Rosewood is an emblem of hope.

THE NEXT 100

The Descendants of Rosewood, Inc. is the host of the centennial commemorative events to mark the 100th anniversary of Rosewood (#Rosewood100).

Before she passed away, former The Rosewood Family, Inc. historian Barbara Scantling Moore asked her brother, Gregory Doctor, to make sure that the Rosewood centennial was a big event. Gregory is the cousin of Arnett Doctor, the descendant who led the fight for the families’ historic reparations settlement in 1994. With his own concerns about elder gatekeepers passing on and the waning knowledge of the Rosewood legacy in the public, Gregory was inspired by Barabra’s request. So he and his wife, Paris Murphy-Doctor, founded The Descendants of Rosewood, Inc. to host the centennial commemorative events to mark the 100th anniversary of Rosewood. For the Doctors, that future starts with honoring the lives that were taken, acknowledging the trauma that was left behind, sharing the stories of the past, commemorating the legacy of the survivors, and celebrating the promise of all that lies ahead.

The Descendants of Rosewood, Inc. is a launch pad for progress. Building on the foundation established by those who came before, the Descendants of Rosewood, Inc. will support other families seeking to reclaim their families’ legacies; advocate for the real conversations of race relations, socio-economic advancement, and true diversity, equity, and inclusion; and champion the ownership of our narratives and leveraging resources to open and expand distribution for those stories, for us and by us.

In an America that still struggles with the reverberating effects of its complicated history, The Descendants of Rosewood, Inc. is an emblem of hope and source of inspiration for the next 100 years and beyond.
